ONCE HE GUARDED THE SLEEPING TOWN – TODAY HE PLAYS THE TRUMPET AND WISHES YOU GOOD NIGHT
We’re talking about the night watchman, who will brighten your summer Fridays and Saturdays in Kroměříž. And he won’t be alone. Accompanied by a guard with a halberd or other weaponry, the watchman brings history to life. In the past, he served as a night patrol – not just announcing the time, but watching over the town and sounding the alarm in case of any unexpected danger. Besides warning of enemy invasions or thieves, he also fulfilled the important role of fire watch.
Today, the night watchman is more of a charming reminder of a long-lost profession – and a tourist attraction aimed at adding a special atmosphere to summer evenings in Kroměříž.
“We start with a fanfare outside the town hall to announce the approaching night quiet hour, then walk around the Main Square, and after about 20 minutes we return to the town hall to say goodbye with a selected musical piece,” says Lenka Velešíková, who plays the role of the trumpeter.
It has become a lovely tradition for tourists and locals alike to pair this unique experience with a peaceful evening stroll before bedtime.
