He is one of the most respected Czech conductors of today, collaborating with orchestras around the world, and in 2024 he received the City of Kroměříž Award. However, Tomáš Netopil remains deeply attached to his hometown. It was here that his musical journey began – and it is here that he still loves to return.
From the Kroměříž Conservatory to the world stage
Tomáš Netopil’s path to international recognition began inconspicuously – in Kroměříž. He studied violin at the local P. J. Vejvanovský Conservatory, and even then his beautiful relationship with music and the city that surrounded him with cultural riches was taking shape.
Today, Tomáš Netopil is one of the most sought-after Czech conductors. In the new 25/26 season, he will take up the prestigious position of chief conductor and artistic director of the Prague Symphony Orchestra and regularly performs on the world’s most important stages – from Paris and Vienna to Tokyo and Chicago. Yet he has never forgotten Kroměříž.
Kroměříž as a source of inspiration
In a video shot at the Archbishop’s Castle in Kroměříž, Tomáš Netopil returns to a place that has special significance for him – the old castle library. It was here that he spent time as a conservatory student, and it was here that music took on a new dimension for him.
“I am standing in the beautiful space of the old library of the Kroměříž Castle, of which I am extremely proud. Since my youth, it has been a source of mystery and new, unseen information for me,” he says.
The library shelves still hold original musical scores and sheet music from the Baroque and Classical periods. Netopil remembers well what it was like when he first held them in his hands—touching music that was created centuries ago.
“I had the opportunity to touch old scores… and these Baroque musical gems are stored right here in this library,” he adds. The place, which is now an admired monument, was for him at that time primarily a source of curiosity, inspiration, and quiet amazement.
Academy Kroměříž: a return to the roots
Tomáš Netopil has long confirmed his special relationship with Kroměříž through his work. In 2018, he founded the international Summer Music Academy Kroměříž, which he still runs as artistic director. The academy brings young musical talents and top lecturers from around the world to the city, giving Kroměříž the unique atmosphere of a lively cultural center.
An award that carries weight
Tomáš Netopil received the City of Kroměříž Award, the highest award given by the city, based on public nominations and the decision of city councilors. The award commemorates not only his international successes, but also his long-standing relationship with Kroměříž, where he lives, studied, and to which he regularly returns.
An invitation to Kroměříž
In conclusion, Tomáš Netopil sends a clear and heartfelt message to all visitors:
“Don’t hesitate to come and see Kroměříž. You will be pleasantly surprised and warmly welcomed by us.”
Music, history, the castle library, and stories of people who are inextricably linked to Kroměříž create an atmosphere that is worth experiencing in person. This is where Tomáš Netopil found inspiration – and you too can experience the reasons why he loves to return to this city.
