THE WINEMAKING TRADITION IN KROMĚŘÍŽ HAS LASTED FOR OVER 700 YEARS

While wine tourism is inseparably linked to South Moravia, did you know that you can also enjoy the experience of high-quality wine and centuries of tradition in Kroměříž? Ideally while sitting in the unique château cellars that produce premium sacramental wines, or in one of the local wine bars.

The winemaking tradition in Kroměříž dates back to the 13th century, when Bishop Bruno of Schauenburg elevated Kroměříž to a town and established wine cellars here. In 1345, then Margrave of Moravia Charles IV granted the cellars the privilege of producing sacramental wine. Later, as King of Bohemia and Holy Roman Emperor, he had the cellars expanded.

This tradition lives on to this day, even though the original vineyards below Barbořina Hill no longer exist. Today, grapes are brought to Kroměříž from the Archbishop’s vineyards in South Moravia. However, the original cellars are still open to visitors, as are the town’s wine shops and wine bars.
