Photo spot at the legendary and magical Barbořina

Please meet our newest addition – the photo point at the top of Barbořina, designed to enhance your visit to Kroměříž and offer the most stunning view not only of the town itself but of a large part of Moravia.

Barbořina is located just beyond Kroměříž and is easily accessible by a gentle walk or by bike. Although the wooded hilltop stands at just 265 metres above sea level, the views from here are truly breathtaking. Kroměříž lies at your feet, and it’s no surprise that this panorama has inspired many well-known artists over the centuries. But Barbořina offers much more. The surrounding landscape is framed by the Upper and Lower Morava valleys. To the right, beyond the Chřiby hills, you can spot the outlines of the White Carpathians. Directly ahead beyond Kroměříž rises the Hostýn Hills, with the Vizovice Highlands behind them. Turn your gaze left toward Svatý Kopeček near Olomouc, and you’ll see the Oderské Hills gradually rising into the Jeseníky Mountains – and on a clear day, even the majestic Praděd.

Perhaps it was this extraordinary view that has drawn people here since ancient times. Barbořina is considered a magical, legend-shrouded place, known to our ancestors possibly as far back as the Bronze Age. In medieval times, it was the site of a gallows and execution pits. During the Thirty Years’ War, General Lennart Torstensson launched his cannon assault on Kroměříž from this very hill. And why is it called Barbořina? In 1690, Bishop Karl II of Liechtenstein-Castelcorn had a chapel built here, dedicated to Saint Barbara – the patron saint of towers, fortresses, miners, and protector against sudden death.

Today, Barbořina is a popular forest park offering both recreation and learning. The 1 km-long Chip the Squirrel’s Nature Trail provides an engaging way for children to discover forest life through fun and interactive tasks. The area also includes a scenic lookout platform, a covered gazebo with benches, a slide, and most notably, a sheltered fire pit where you can roast sausages. The new photo point “Kroměříž – Closer to the Heart” perfectly complements the charm of this suburban park. Enjoy your trip, take in the views, and share your photos with us (#visitkromeriz, #kromerizsrdcibliz).
