Churches and Chapels

The Church and its representatives have always had a significant impact on the town and on its monuments. One of the most remarkable monuments is, of course, the Archbishop’s Chateau, which was built and rebuilt to its present-day form on the initiative of church officials, and which became the summer residence of the bishops and archbishops of Olomouc. But the town is also rich in purely ecclesiastical buildings, such as churches and chapels. The most prominent personalities who influenced the development of the town were two bishops of Olomouc: Bruno von Schauenburg and Karl II von Liechtenstein Kastelkorn. Thanks to them, not only the chateau was built in the town, but also churches, such as the Church of St. Maurice, the Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary, the Church of St. John the Baptist, which together form the famous and captivating panorama of the town. Over time, the ecclesiastical buildings in the town centre were expanded by the Church of Ss. Cyril and Methodius in the Slovan housing estate.
